At Lees Brook Academy, we are very fortunate to provide all Year 7 and 8 pupils with an hour of Dance or drama in addition to two hours of PE per week.
Our Dance curriculum inspires students to develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of dance as both an art form and a physical activity. Through engaging and inclusive learning experiences, students explore movement, performance and choreography while developing physical, social and emotional skills that support their wider education and personal growth.
Our curriculum is designed to provide all students with opportunities to perform, create and evaluate dance across a range of styles, cultures and traditions. Students develop technical proficiency, expressive performance skills and an understanding of how dance communicates ideas, emotions and narratives. We encourage students to take creative risks, collaborate effectively and reflect critically on their own work and the work of others.
Through the study of dance, students will:
- Develop competence and confidence in a range of dance techniques and styles.
- Build physical skills including strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and fitness.
- Learn to choreograph, perform and evaluate dance independently and collaboratively.
- Explore cultural diversity and gain an appreciation of dance traditions from around the world.

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to study BTEC Dance, where they deepen their practical, performance and choreographic skills through vocational learning. The BTEC qualification enables students to experience dance in a professional context, developing industry-relevant knowledge and transferable skills such as teamwork, creativity, organisation and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to become reflective practitioners who can perform, create and evaluate dance to a high standard while preparing for further education, training or careers within the performing arts sector.
