At Lees Brook Academy, we are very fortunate to provide all Year 7 and 8 pupils with an hour of Dance or drama in addition to two hours of PE per week.
Year 7 Drama aims to develop students’ communication skills, confidence and basic drama knowledge; focusing on team building skills, challenging activities and understanding of drama’s explorative strategies. We have practical workshop based lessons that look at drama skills such as vocals and physicals skills interlinking this with basic drama techniques.
Year 8 expands on skills and knowledge developed in year 7 but with a greater emphasis on creating, developing and sustaining characters. Reading skills are developed through script work, key terminology and analytical challenges. The wider aspects of theatre are explored with evaluative outcomes.
Year 9 expands on skills and knowledge developed in previous years. Through this year there is a greater emphasis on the demands expected at GCSE level. Students need to take autonomy over the direction of performance and liaise with group members to negotiate agreed outcomes. Throughout the year students will develop skills to become more disciplined performers. The exploration of theatre practitioners enables students to develop critical reasoning and analytical skills.
KS4 GCSE Drama
Through the exploration of a diverse range of theatrical styles, texts and practitioners, students develop a deeper understanding of how drama reflects, questions and shapes the world around them. We believe that drama provides a unique opportunity for students to express themselves creatively, develop empathy and build the confidence to communicate effectively. Our curriculum encourages students to take creative risks, collaborate with others and reflect critically on their work, fostering resilience, independence and self-belief. Our curriculum is designed to inspire, challenge and empower students to become confident performers, imaginative creators and thoughtful audiences.
