Design & Technology Product Design

Within Design and Technology, we intend students to learn powerful knowledge that will enable them to develop skills for life and pursue a career within the Technology or Food industry. Students gain a broad knowledge and understanding of a range of materials, processes, design strategies and new and emerging technologies, equipping students with the skills to solve real world problems. Students shall also understand and apply the principles of nutrition.

Students in Year 7 and 8 rotate around 3 subject areas; Design Innovation, Design Engineering, Food & Nutrition and complete a 2-week introduction at the beginning of the year, looking at drawing skills and the impact of D&T.

At Year 9, rotations mirror KS4 options and students complete 2 smaller rotations of Food, Product Design and Engineering. This is to give students a flavour of GCSE option choices whilst continuing to develop key knowledge of the National Curriculum.

Throughout the year experiential learning opportunities are offered through enrichment opportunities. We believe that learning based on experience, observation and doing is vital within Technology. Opportunities include STEM competitions, school trips and collaborating with industry leaders and education providers such as Alstom, Rolls Royce, Tidy Co and Derby University to inspire our students. We want our students to be ready for a pathway or career in all disciplines within Technology.
