Food Preparation & Nutrition
Within Design and Technology we intend students to learn and develop a range of practical skills that will enable them to develop skills for life and pursue a career within the Technology or Food industry. We want students to gain a broad knowledge and understanding of a range of materials, design products for a range of users and the world around them using an iterative process. We also intend for students to be able to understand and apply the principles of nutrition.
Students in Year 7 and 8 rotate around 4 subject areas to do this, Food, Graphics Design, D&T: Woods and Plastics, Engineering: Metals and complete a 2 week introduction at the beginning of the year looking at drawing skills and sustainability. This is so we can get students using a range of tools, machines and materials to be able to meet our design, make and knowledge intentions. At Year 9 they do 2 smaller rotations through Food, D&T and Engineering (Graphic Design at Year 9 falls within Art). This is so that students can be ready to opt for their chosen KS4 subjects yet still continue to develop broad key skills across the subjects.
Throughout the year experiential learning opportunities will be offered in the format of enrichment opportunities. We believe that learning based on experience, observation and doing is vital within Technology. Opportunities include; STEM competitions, school trips and collaborating with industry leaders and education providers such as Bombardier, Rolls Royce, Tidy Co and Derby University to inspire our students. We want our students to be ready for a pathway or career in all disciplines within Technology.
