The Step-Up Programme is for young people who enjoy learning through practical activities and who wish to become more self-confident and develop greater independence. It is designed to introduce learners to vocational areas as well as improving a range of other skills like Literacy, Numeracy, Employability, Learning To Learn and Personal Development.

No specific qualifications are required to take this course. You will be asked to attend a short interview after you apply.

What will I learn on the course?

You will choose one of the following vocational areas: Hairdressing
Construction Skills
Working with Children

Whichever area you choose you will learn practical skills which will help you progress on to further qualifications. The programme will also allow you to improve your knowledge and skills in several of the following areas:­

  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Learning to Learn
  • Developing Skills for a Healthy Lifestyle
  • Personal Career Planning
  • Work Experience
  • Taking Part in Sport
  • Preparing and Cooking Food
  • Money Management
  • Confidence Building

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by tutors at the Skills Academy on an ongoing basis. You are required to produce a portfolio of evidence which is marked by an external assessor from the Open College Network.

What qualification will I achieve if I successfully complete the course?

The name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:
NOCN Entry Level Diploma in Skills towards Enabling Progression.

Will I be able to gain any other additional qualifications?

You will further develop and gain qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

  What will I be able to do after the course finishes?

You will be able to progress on to a Level 1 Vocational Course at the Skills Academy or another college.
