Why should I take this course?

You should take this course if you are thinking about a career in the exercise and fitness sector or the outdoor education sector. You will gain a good grounding in the essential skills crucial to this area of study, giving you the opportunity to progress to a qualification at Level 3, or enter into your first job within these sectors.

What do I need to join the course?

You must be 16 years of age at the beginning of the course and have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in exercise and fitness or outdoor education.

You must have:­

BTEC Introductory Diploma in Sport or  

Four GCSEs at grades D to F including a Grade D in English or a Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy

You will need to attend an interview to judge your suitability for enrolment of the course. Good timekeeping, attendance and a willingness to learn will be important factors for the completion of the course.

What will I learn on the course?

The following core units must be taken: 

The Body in Sport
Health, Safety and Injury in Sport

Four of the following specialist units must be taken: 
Preparation for Sport
Planning and Leading Sports Activities
Practical Sport or
Practical Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Work based project in Sport

How will I be assessed?

You are required to create a portfolio of evidence which shows that you meet the standards associated with each unit. You are also required to complete a number of assignments. The qualification is graded a Pass, Merit or Distinction. The evidence you produce is assessed by your Tutor and then externally verified by the examining board.

What qualification will I achieve if I successfully complete the course? 

If you choose the Practical Sport unit from the list of specialist units above, the name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:

EDEXCEL First Diploma in Sport (Exercise and Fitness)

If you choose the Practical Outdoor and Adventurous Activities unit from the list of specialist units above, the name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:  

EDEXCEL First Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Education)  
 

Both these qualifications are equivalent to 4 GCSEs graded A* to C.

Will I be able to gain any other additional qualifications?

If you have not already gained a higher grade pass (grade A* to C) in English and Mathematics you will undertake Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy which are equivalent to higher grade passes.

What will I be able to do after the course finishes?

If you achieve an overall pass grade or better in this qualification, it is possible for you to progress to a higher level qualification such as the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences or the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Education), or to take additional studies at Level 2, such as an NVQ.
