Why should I take this course?

You should take this course if you are thinking about a career in the retail sector. The course will give you a wide range of skills and techniques and help you to develop personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

During the course you will undertake a one day a week work placement. Currently our partners include: ASDA · Debenhams · Matalan · Marks & Spencer and Burton.

What do I need to join the course?

You must be 16 years of age at the start of the course and have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in retail.

You must have:­ BTEC Introductory Diploma in Retail, Business and Administration or  Four  GCSEs at grades D to F including a grade D in English or a Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy

You will need to attend an interview to judge your suitability for enrolment on the course. Good timekeeping, attendance and a willingness to learn will be important factors for the completion of the course.

What will I learn on the course? 

You will cover the following units:- 

Introduction to Retail Services
Detail Selling and Customer Service
Merchandising and Display for Retail Sales
Advertising and Sales in Retail
Fashion Retailing
Retail Work-based Project

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continual and will include observation of practical tasks, written tests, oral questions and assignments. Evidence of competency will be included in a portfolio.

What qualification will I achieve if I successfully complete the course?

The name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Retail
This qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* to C. 

Will I be able to gain any other additional qualifications? 

If you have not already gained a higher grade pass (grade A* to C) in English and Mathematics you will undertake Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy which are equivalent to higher grade passes.

What will I be able to do after the course finishes? 

You will be able to progress on to NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related subject, a specialised qualification (Level 3 BTEC National Award in Retail) or to enter the workplace in a suitable role under supervision.
