Why should I take this course?

You should take this course if you are thinking about a career in the health or caring services.

What do I need to join the course? 

You must be 16 years old at the start of the course and have a genuine interest in health and social care.

You must have:­

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades D to F including a grade D or equivalent in English or a Level 1 certificate in Adult Literacy

A Level 1 qualification, for example, BTEC Introductory Diploma in Health and Social Care

You will need to attend an interview to judge your suitability for enrolment on the course. Good timekeeping, attendance and a willingness to learn will be important factors for the completion of the course.


What will I learn on the course?

You will cover the following units:

Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors
Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors
Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care setting including a 60 hour work placement
Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
Human Lifespan Development
The Impact of Diet on Health

How will I be assessed? 

All the units on this course are assessed through project and assignment work. There are no external examinations. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction is awarded on completion.

What qualification will I achieve if I successfully complete the course?

The name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:

EDEXCEL BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care 
 

This qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* to C.

Will I be able to gain any other additional qualifications?

If you have not already gained a higher grade pass (grade A* to C) in English and Mathematics you will undertake Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy which are equivalent to higher grade passes.

What will I be able to do after the course finishes?

You can either continue with education by progressing onto the Advanced BTEC Diploma or Certificate in Health and Social Care, or enter a Health or Social Care related career within Residential Care Homes, Housing Organisations, Hospitals, Community Organisations or the Voluntary Service.
