Why should I take this course?

If you are thinking about a career in the construction industry then this course will give you an introduction to the practical skills and knowledge required. It is a “hands on” programme delivered in a realistic working environment. The course aims to prepare you for further training leading eventually to employment within the construction industry.

What do I need to join the course?

You must be 16 years of age at the start of the course and have a genuine interest in construction. You must have:­

BTEC Introductory Diploma in Construction or

Four  GCSEs at grades D to F including a grade D in English or a Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy

You will need to attend an interview to judge your suitability for enrolment on the course. Good timekeeping, attendance and a willingness to learn will be important factors for completion of the course.

What will I learn on the course?

You will do the following units on this course:

An Introduction to the Construction Industry
Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction

Construction Processes and Operation for  Low-Rise Domestic Buildings
Exploring Carpentry and Joinery
Exploring Trowel Operations
Exploring Painting and Decorating

How will I be assessed? 

Assessment is continual and will include observation of practical tasks, written tests, oral questions and assignments. Evidence of competency will be included in a portfolio.

What qualification will I achieve if I successfully complete the course?

The name of the qualification you will achieve if you successfully complete the course is:

EDEXCEL BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Construction

This qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* to C.

Will I be able to gain any other additional qualifications?

If you have not already gained a higher grade pass (grade A* to C) in English and Mathematics you will undertake Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy which are equivalent to higher grade passes.

What will I be able to do after the course finishes?

You will be able to progress on to an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in a related subject, a Level 3 National Diploma in Construction, other specialist qualifications or to employment in a suitable role under supervision.
